Vient Chair

I wanted to try making a chair like the kind you see stacked in conference rooms or auditoriums.

But I wanted it to be as clean and simple as possible. Then the idea struck me: what if I built the frame from thin stainless steel and wove rattan into it? That could be beautiful.

With the help of the skilled metalworking Brothers, the prototyping began. Based on drawings that were far from 100% complete, the 1st prototype was made. The atmosphere was just as I imagined—really good. But as a chair, it could still be better.

There were 6 or 7 points, both in appearance and in comfort, that I thought could be improved. Incorporating those changes led to the 2nd prototype. The look improved a lot. But when I sat and rocked my body side to side, the frame still felt a bit shaky. “Hmm…” the three of us groaned together, while the Brothers came up with several new ideas. With so few structural parts in the design, was there really anything we could do? I didn’t want to add obvious reinforcements and ruin the look.

Then came the 3rd prototype. Perfect! The appearance hadn’t changed, but the solidity had increased, and as a chair it felt far more complete. Combined with the beautiful work of the rattan craftsman, it became a chair that looks like something you might have seen somewhere, yet doesn’t exist anywhere else.

From the very beginning, people around me didn’t quite get it. I heard things like, “Doesn’t really look like TRUCK, does it?” But I kept thinking, “I know, but I’m sure it will turn out great.”

After it was finished, I was surprised to see how naturally it matched with all kinds of tables. It blended right in. It even worked with small desks. The sense of openness was wonderful. And actually, it was really comfortable to sit in. You could sit for hours. I say “actually” because some people told me, “It looks great in photos, but I wonder how it feels to sit in.” Then they sat down, were surprised, and loved it. That made me so glad.

“Viento” means wind in Spanish.

This chair carries the same easy comfort as curtains gently fluttering in the breeze.
