Tudor Lounge Chair

On a shelf in my room sits a panel photograph that caught my eye.
It’s a black-and-white shot my friend Tatsuo took in Malibu, capturing Joel Tudor riding a wave, hanging ten with effortless style.
Tatsuo, who was born in Osaka, lived in a Ford van around San Diego, California, from 2009 to 2020. For eleven years he photographed surfers with vintage cameras, dreaming of one day publishing a book. After more than twenty years, his dream finally came true with the release of his beautiful photo book authentic wave. I got this particular photograph at the book launch event.
Ever since I first started surfing, Joel Tudor has been someone I deeply admired.
The way he rides—with a relaxed ease yet a distinct style—sets him apart. I loved his video LONGER, which felt different from all the other surf films. The music was perfect, the colors of his surfboards matched my taste. I always wished I could let go and move with that kind of looseness.
So yes, I’ll call this chair “Tudor.”
This lounge chair carries that same “huff” feeling you get when sinking into a sofa, but also a lightness that brings joy. It lets you relax, but not too much. There’s something in it that reminds me of Joel’s way of riding—a looseness, but with an underlying strength.
Sit in this chair, put on LONGER, and maybe you can feel just a little closer to Joel.
Wait a second—did I just go on and on without really talking about the chair at all?
