The SUTTO HIGH STOOL has been a TRUCK standard for about twenty years.
It’s easy to use, and I’ve been using it myself all along. For breakfast, I was usually sitting on this stool. I still like many of its details—the angle of the legs as they open out, the underside of the seat shaved at a slant.
One day I thought, what if I took that same balance and made it entirely in wood? I drew it out and started a prototype. The footrest ring was changed to brass. The first prototype felt really good. Still, something bothered me, so I shaved the inside corners of the legs on a whim. That felt better. I decided to go with it.
After using it for a while, another thing began to bother me. The proportions looked a bit tight. So, in the second prototype, I increased the seat diameter by 20mm and shifted the legs outward to match. That made a big difference. It felt more open, more balanced. This was it.
One of its charms is the seat’s underside, shaved at an angle, where the legs are joined.
It’s not something you notice at a glance. You might see it when you bend down to pick something up, or from a sofa a little distance away. Otherwise it goes unnoticed. But when you’re sitting and run your hand along it, or pick it up to move it, you feel it clearly.
I find myself thinking, maybe that’s just the right amount of subtlety—and I’m quietly pleased, telling myself I made something good. The scooped-out seat is also kind to the body, comfortable even for long sitting.
