Pendant P-GS1
A few years ago, at THE INY COFFEE in Nara — a place I visit from time to time for coffee — there was an exhibition of glass works by Sae Koda of nora glassworks.
Among the many beautiful pieces, I chose a glass and a small vase. I was especially drawn to the texture of the vase and kept it somewhere always within sight.
One day, I began to wonder — what if this material quality could become a lamp? I made a sketch and spoke with Sae about the idea. The molds for shaping the glass were produced at TRUCK, and after repeated prototyping, the piece was finally completed.
The lampshade is mouth-blown glass made using the highly skilled incalmo technique, which fuses two different colors — white and clear — into a single form. The white glass has a texture reminiscent of lunar craters, while the transparent glass is scattered with tiny air bubbles. The overall finish is matte, allowing the light to pass through softly and gently.
Two distinct expressions of glass merge into one, creating a uniquely tender glow that only glass can produce. Each texture has its own charm, and whether lit or unlit, the lamp carries a quiet yet striking presence.
At the top of the shade, a machined brass component connects the white cord to the glass — and this combination of materials adds yet another layer of beauty to the piece.
