Linn Side Table

In February 1999, I held an exhibition at a gallery in Horie, Osaka.
The title was Truck Tables 3×3, ideas on specimens on table.
I chose to express the TRUCK worldview not through furniture, but with other things: small stones or leaves I had picked up somewhere, illustrations, snapshots of everyday life, even a toy that played short 8mm films.
All of these were displayed on nine stands, each 500×500mm and 550mm high.
Those “stands” were made of white oak with knots and cracks.
A simple square top with four square legs.
Small in size yet full of presence, they became the starting point for what would later grow into TRUCK’s OAK TABLE. Some of them are still with me today.
I wanted to make that stand even more reduced, more elemental.
A shape you could draw in a single stroke, with slightly adjusted proportions.
But looking closely, you notice it is in fact quite complex: four square legs and four beams crossing each other as if woven together.
From a distance the complexity fades, leaving only a clean outline, and the form appears quietly dignified.
That’s why I named it LINN—adding just one “N” to the word “rin,” which in Japanese means dignified.
When this table is in a room, the atmosphere tightens slightly, and the space itself feels composed and serene.
