Havana Chair—S.T,N.E.
(1)
I wanted to create a chair that could be used even at a generously sized dining table.
By “generous,” I don’t mean large—it’s just slightly more spacious than usual. But that small amount of extra room seems to make you feel more at ease when you sit down. Almost as if the chair itself were gently saying, “No need to rush.”
Kommy, who once worked with us at TRUCK, had previously been a crane operator. His boss at the time always told him, “Arrive about twenty minutes early.” Heavy vehicles can’t stop quickly, even with hard braking, so the lesson was never to drive in a rush but instead to act with time to spare.
It’s a story I still recall often, even years later. I don’t always manage to live by it, but I’d like to.
Another craftsman who worked at TRUCK, Tanaka, always moved with a calm, unhurried rhythm. And yet his work was quick and beautifully finished. That was the coolest thing of all. It’s the same with swimming the crawl: I admire the people who move in broad, relaxed strokes, yet glide through the water with great speed. That’s the kind of way of being I’ve always admired.
The HAVANA CHAIR comes in two types—with arms and without.
The armchair brings a sense of being gently enclosed, which makes it especially relaxing. The arms are carefully sculpted, with a distinctive shape and a slight bulge carved into the underside near the tips. When you rest your arms on them, your fingertips naturally touch that curve—you feel it, and somehow that tiny detail makes you feel closer to the chair.
The armless version, on the other hand, has a sense of openness and freedom. Though the seat size is the same, it feels more spacious. Even getting up to fetch something from the kitchen feels lighter and easier.
In the bustle of everyday life, I hope this chair brings a little generosity, and that even after standing up, it becomes a cue to carry that calm feeling with you.
