Floor Lamp F-JR1

This lamp is made from limestone said to date back to the time when the ancient supercontinent Pangaea began to split in two.

Formed during the Jurassic period some 160 million years ago, the stone may even contain fossils within it.

It is from such stone that this lamp was created.

When the stone craftsman first saw the drawings, he said, “This can’t be done.”

He explained that it would be possible by drilling holes into several short cylinders and connecting them together — but that would end up looking like bamboo. That, of course, was not an option.

I carefully explained the idea once more. After listening, he replied, “I don’t know if it can be done — but let’s try.”

A few weeks later, the stone column arrived, exactly as I had envisioned it. Yes!

To that column, we paired a machined brass component to support the shade, and topped it with a slightly larger yet clean-lined shade.

S.T,N.E. had been moving forward under the nickname “adult TRUCK.” When I saw the completed lamp standing there, my first thought was that it exceeded my own level of adulthood — perhaps by quite a bit.

And yet, without hesitation, I placed it beside the sofa and began living with it. It felt unexpectedly comfortable. Perhaps it raised my own sense of maturity; perhaps I simply grew fond of it. Before long, it became a natural presence.

When I moved it out for a photoshoot and replaced it with another lamp, the substitute wasn’t bad at all — but somehow, the room felt a little lonely.

Its presence had quietly become part of everyday life, in the best possible way.

Its silhouette is refined and slender — but it is stone. True to its nature, it carries a reassuring, substantial weight.

And that, too, is part of its appeal.
