S.T,N.E. features many products including sofas and chairs that use textiles from Kvadrat, a textile manufacturer headquartered in Denmark.
Founded in 1968, Kvadrat produces high-quality, contemporary fabrics rooted in the traditions of Scandinavian design. The company collaborates with world-renowned designers, architects, and artists.
Kvadrat’s textiles are made using only the highest quality raw materials at weaving mills in the UK, Norway, and the Netherlands. They are exceptionally durable, and most of their products come with a 10-year warranty.
Like a comfortable, high-quality knit you’d want to wear every day
by Tokuhiko Kise
I like things that become more beautiful and more interesting the longer they are used. But not things that are made to look old from the start – rather, things that gain character with age and everyday use. Furniture and people might be the same. If you want them around for a long time, they need to be resilient. You also shouldn’t tire of seeing them.
And such is the duty of the maker.
I’ve always kept that in mind when making furniture. As TRUCK approaches its 30th anniversary and I continue developing the furniture for S.T,N.E., my intention is to strip things down as much as possible and refine the quality even further. Like a plain knit that seems simple but when you touch the fabric, you get a sense of its quality and how comfortable it is, and that it somehow feels even better when you put it on. The kind of knit you’d want to wear every day. I perceive furniture in the same way.
When I came across Kvadrat’s fabrics, I was honestly excited. They appear plain, but they’re actually woven with subtly mixed threads that give them a depth beyond a simple flat color. The layered construction gives them a unique texture that feels incredible to the touch. The company is so confident in its durability that many of their fabrics even come with a 10-year warranty. They don’t fade or fray easily. When I saw that, I knew I had to incorporate their fabrics into my work. At the same time, I felt strongly that I had to create furniture worthy of them.
When adapting the FK SOFA – an item we’ve been producing for over 20 years – into a Kvadrat version, I took another careful look at the materials inside and made adjustments to improve them. Of course, these upgrades are now found in all FK SOFA models.
Seeing a company like Kvadrat so dedicated to its craft flipped a switch in me as well.
More than ever, I want to keep making things even better.
